It just makes the society more sustainable, otherwise more middle class will leave NYC. My guess is: it kinda makes sense in some ways, the rent is way too high in New York City, and middle class residents really need help too. It seems it does not make sense, but I believe everything happens for a reason.
#Nyc housing connect gov full
Full time students are not in the priority group.įor some people arguing: it does not make sense that most housing units go to middle income people, only a small percentage of public housing units go to really low income people. It all depends on society resource, they are many senior people waiting for many years, and still get nothing. But if go back to reason #1, it still make no sense to offer full time students housing financial assistance. If a full time student needs housing help, it makes more sense to offer short term financial help (cash or section 8), not public housing unit. So what happen if students become ineligible one day and refuse to move out?Ĥ. That ends up some people live in government housing units with empty bedroom, that is for real. Seriously, if they still refuse to move out, there is not much for government to do, it is unlikely that Government will ask for court order to evict the old parents. Sometimes money works, but not always works, since people get used to live there and like the location.

Then what else can government do? Government can offer a few thousands and ask them to switch to another small government unit. In face, in NYC, there are many people refuse to move out of public housing once they become ineligible one day, for example (this is not even for the case of student), if a low income family (with a few children) was assigned to a 3-bedroom apartment, then the children grow up and leave the parents, government tries to ask old parents to move to a small apartment, but most people will deny. For most students, their finance situation will be dramatically changed after graduation (no need to pay tuition, make more money). Although full time students are financially qualified, it is just temporary. Typically students are always financially qualified.ģ. Resource is limited, if full time students are qualified, there are plenty of college students out there. There are plenty of other people don't have money to stay in college, only 1/3 of adult have bachelor degree.Ģ.

Since you still have money to pay for tuition and other school related costs, why I think government should help you with your housing? If you feel financially difficulty, you can be part time student. Education is very important but not necessary. If I have 100% authority to make policy, I probably will exclude full time students too. After the master degree, the chances of getting a well paid job are high and that's one person out of the assistance program. I need the lottery now to cut down my expenses and focus on school. Isn't that a system inciting people to be lazy somehow? Then they complain about people taking advantage of the system.

If I'm a full time student and work full time under salary, why would you look at me as a full time student and not a full time worker? So if I decide to go part time, then in the future, I'll get my chances. Crazy thing is, I'm always lucky to have low numbers, get an email from them and then get rejected because of the student rule or whatever.
